Audition Information for 2007-2008 School Year

We are very excited about the 2007-2008 school year!  It all begins with auditions.  Everyone in the band tries out on the same material. The audition is based on twelve major scales, as many octaves and as many by memory as possible, plus some easy sight-reading.  We prefer quarter-note, eighth note pattern (tongue up slur down) and circle of fourths (concert C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, B, E, A, D, G) but that is not mandatory.  The most important thing is to try to play as many scales as possible!

Here’s an example of how the scoring works:

bullet

A one octave scale, not memorized with no mistakes is worth 5.0 points

bullet

That same scale memorized is worth 7.0 points.

bullet

Same scale two octaves is worth 8.0 points,

bullet

The same two octave scale memorized is worth 10.0 points

Get the idea!

Here’s how it adds up:

bullet

Student A plays 8 major scales 1 octave not by memory…………score is 40

bullet

Student B plays all 12 major scales 1 octave not by memory……..score is 60

bullet

Student C plays all twelve major scales 1 octave and has 5 memorized….score is 70

bullet

Student D plays all 12 Major scales 2 octaves memorized……….score is 120

After everyone has auditioned, we simply rank by score and divide you into bands!

Few freshmen ever make Wind Symphony at the beginning of their freshman year…but we audition each semester so you have a new chance before the Christmas Holidays.

Some freshmen make Symphonic band.  Most freshmen make Concert or Varsity Bands.  We had several freshmen move up from Symphonic Band to Wind Symphony, and Concert Band to Symphonic Band at the semester break!

Everyone is part of the Marching Band!
